It’s the fastest, most responsive board I’ve ever owned

•February 2, 2010 • Leave a Comment

The 6’6” G-4.f has turned out to be my all around work horse.

It’s the fastest, most responsive board I’ve ever owned!

The thing about this board is the fact that it’s

so alive in small waves but yet it

maintains control in punchier surf.

I can push this board in  the 7 foot Hawaiian scale with utmost confidence….

Thanks Todd, you’re a master craftsman

as well as a consummate professional.

Performance Proxy Epoxy Longboard Review: “it was just a amazing ride”

•August 28, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Hi There

Well the board was awesome.  I ended up spending a week + at san onofre .

Had so much fun and the board performed awesome.

I got back to Antigua last night  unfortunately board-less as the airline seems to have misplaced the board.

Anyhow ,  thanx again for that piece of art. I really enjoyed riding it over the last few weeks.

If i don’t get the board returned I will re-order

another as it was just a amazing ride.

Todd,

Hey! It’s Craig In New York. Just sending you a quick note to tell you my groveler 4 worked really well during this past swell we had here.

It was about six to eight on Saturday and it felt

like the board was made for these type of waves.

On Sunday the swell peaked and I felt like I could have used some more board because it was BIG!!! What would you recommend for me?

On Monday when the swell backed off I jumped

on my rascal and caught the most waves

I have ever caught.

Anyway. I am still in the market for the falcon. I will be ordering that soon. I just bought a house at the beach and now I am so broke. Back to work in a few days so we will get that going soon. Look foward to hearing back from you.

Todd:

I just wanted to write to say thanks…huge…

I was in your shop a few weeks ago on a Saturday…I ended up buying the 6′2″ accelerator.  This is my first true shortboard and I have been nothing but psyched.

It’s already been a great match for me surfing

the beach breaks around SLO this time of year.

I’m already looking forward to buying my next board from you…maybe a “good waves” board for this winter!!!  You’ll have to give me your recommendation when the time comes.

I’m also going to bring my girlfriend in towards the beginning of September to order a longboard for her.  I was telling you about her when I was in last time.  It’s her b-day and it’s time to get her a board of her own!

I hope all is well.  And thanks again.

The Accelerator: Shaper’s Breakdown

This board is specifically designed to make small wave performance surfing easy. You get fast-driving speed bursts off the front foot and hair-trigger, tail whipping warp-arcs off the back foot. A wider nose outline and low entry rocker get this board into waves quicker and blot it down the line faster. A bendy tail rocker sweeps off the back fin making it quick and responsive in tight rail-arcing hook-turns. An even single concave runs through the midsection of the board making for a “wide open sweet spot” i.e. the board wants to go even if you don’t have your feet right in the perfect spot every time.

Todd, Charissa and Crew,

Just wanted to thank you guys for the new board,

it really is a work of art.

Great job with the packing (it took me about 15 minutes to get it out) and once it was out I wasn’t sure if I should wax it or hang it on my wall as art, thankfully I didn’t choose the latter.  The package came about an hour before I was headed to the jersey shore so it worked out well.  As luck would have it the summer swells have been pretty decent here in jersey but this past weekend with new board in hand it was virtually flat.  I was able to grab a couple knee high swells but obviously not enough to really get a feel for the board.  What I can say is that

the thing really paddles great

in fact I found it just as, if not easier,

to catch a wave on my 7′ 2″ Big Chief

than on my 7′10″ funboard, very impressive

so I can only imagine how she will surf.  Being a tradesman myself I can really appreciate the overall quality of the board and

it just seems to have soul,

something that is lacking in many industries.

Having gone through some difficult times as of late I look to embrace anything that puts a smile on my face, your board truly did, and I’m sure it will bring many more in the future.
Thanks again.
Best Wishes,

•July 17, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Todd,

I surfed the new board in 1ft to 4ft Hawaiian, clean to ugly Ho’okipa conditions. I only wish I had ordered this board last year.

It does everything I want it to do.

You can delete the old hybrid file because this tail caves II fits my surfing perfectly.
This board is much faster getting into the wave as well as transitioning over the flat spots.

Rail to rail I feel I can set up the big snap with 100% confidence.

That was something I was missing with the other epoxy board, I was always fighting the bouyancy of the board while bottom turning. Anyways I have more control through my turns with the new board and it has a lot of whip. I can’t wait for my knee to be fully recovered so I can tweek the last bit of my turns, but all in good time.

I haven’t touched my magic polyester board since I’ve pulled yours out of the box….and I love that board!

three years later…

I’m still riding the epoxy Tailcaves II and

it still doesn’t have any open dings

after three years.

The leash plug finally came out last month but the plastic cup stayed put. All I had to do was glue it back in and
reinforce it w/ cloth just in case.

Todd, I ride this board hard and I even put on

a little weight and the board only has a

shallow well where my backfoot goes.

I even put some mileage on my single fin too.  It’s a fun board to ride on the glassy overhead days when I want to get a laugh, but the occassional faceplants aren’t as funny. Sometimes I forget that bottom turning on that board takes a bit of finesse. Anyways, I got too many boards here, but I’m looking forward to my new Lil’ Rascal.  I just realized that I need something like it on Maui for summer and the inbetween swell days of winter.  Thanks again. Aloha.

The epoxy glassing with S cloth is holding up really good

•May 28, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Hi Todd, its Nick,

I ordered a board from you like a month or so ago.

Its one of my favorite boards I’ve owned.

Paddles great, gets into waves real easy

and smooth, gets up and going right away.

I love the lower rocker, lots of speed, easy board to ride, feels like I’m in the sweet spot of the board all the time.  Loose, snappy and responsive.  A friend tried it and said it was really forgiving and easy to ride too.

The epoxy glassing with S cloth is holding up really good.

Barely showing pressure dings from my front foot, my other boards that are glassed with regular D cloth show pressure dings after a week.  The board’s awesome, love it.  Thanks again!!  Would order another one right away but I can’t be spending money like that in this economy.  Must say your boards a quite a bit more expensive than other boards out there but great boards though.  Have a great one.

How’re you doing?
I really like the board!

During the vacation in CA I used it for surf at Oceanside, Swamis.

So it also works well for waves in Japan.

..I will continue to use it.

The new G-4.E has undergone little tweaks to the rocker here and there, to the point that this design has become so versatile that it is not fair to call it a groveler any more….it generates tons of speed in small waves, but it also works so good in good waves. Future Fin System: FAM2 Thruster

Big Chief

Developed specifically for heavier surfers and/or those that surf more off their rail; this is the shortboard you can rip on and not sink on. Heavier surfers and those that grew up surfing during the 80’s era tend to surf more with their rails then off their fins. So the fuller rails of this design are essential for a board that “pushes back” and drives through turns. Increased volume, especially under the chest, affords ease in paddling. A versatile rocker and a single-to-double concave bottom generates incredible speed in the small stuff, yet maintains the essential responsiveness for quick direction changes in the pocket. There’s a slight vee off the back fin that gives the board a positive directional hold through turns.

In the water, the weight and flex dynamics of the board are very predictable and fluid.

•May 12, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Charissa and Todd,

I’ve had enough opportunities to ride the new 9′6 HPLB where I feel I can write a decent review.

First off, the craftsmanship of the board is really top notch.

EPS boards often come out with smudgy paint and dodgy glassing and this board is a far cry from that — the glassing is solid and the airspray looks super clean.

In the water, the weight and flex dynamics

of the board are very predictable and fluid.

It’s not a super stiff Surftech type feel, it’s not a damper poly-type feel, it’s somewhere in between.

Lightweight, high performance, solid, predictable.

The board turns very well from the back 2/3 of the board.  This is enhanced by the generous rocker and probably the bottom contours as well.  I think the board is stable enough on the nose to enjoy some nice tip time as well.  I haven’t had it out yet on a decent beach-break noseride day where I could really spend a ton of time on the tip, but I can tell there are some solid dynamics in the bottom contours that will enable some fun in the future!

Overall, this is a great ‘everyday’ high perf board

and I expect to get a lot of use out of it.

I may bring it to Hawaii in the next few weeks to try it out in some decent juice.

FYI I thought the 7″ Cutaway fin and SB1’s were really over-finned for the board in the conditions I am surfing it in.  I swapped out the SB1’s for SB3’s (375’s vs 325’s) and I intend to put in a 6.5″ Cutaway as soon as I can get my hands on one.  A lot of this has to do with the mediocre conditions that are available to me, where I want as much looseness as possible.  The board is not overly volumed — if anything, it’s pretty thinned out in the rails, so it enjoys the looseness a lot.  I want to try it as a single soon — too many fins, too little time!

Thanks again, will be in touch soon.

Best,

This board feels so much more loose than my 9’4″ and holds confidently on late drops

•April 15, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Todd and Charissa,

Thank you for sending the pic of me with my new stick. This board is very sweet. I have now had the chance to get used to it and I am very pleased.

At first I wasn’t quite use to it because

it is so lively when I push it as compared with my other non-Proctor 9’4″.

That board is good in its own right but doesn’t have the beveled rails this one does.  This board feels so much more loose than my 9’4″ and

holds confidently on late drops

(the kind where you’re watching the nose just

about a milli-second from pearling).

Thanks for the great artwork, special message I asked you to put under the glass and your great customer service skills. I wish you the best with your biz but with the way you make your customers feel special, you’ll gain their loyalty.

Farberow Flex 9.0″ Single Fin – True Ames

Performance Noserider Longboard

This board features a teardrop outline with a fuller nose to provide drive up front. A lower entry rocker and increased tail rocker keep it quick-trimming off the nose, yet loose off the tail. The bottom has a single concave under the nose that splits into double caves through the mid, and accelerates into a spiral vee through the last third of the board. A beveled/ chimed rail releases the compressed water from underneath the board giving you a drivey, yet forgiving feel. This bottom configuration puts a V-8 under the hood when your up on the nose, and tips the rail into throttling cutbacks. The best in the line for combining high performance responsiveness with long-time noserides.
For all-around I recommend a squashtail; And for the bowlier stuff, a round pin flows. Comes standard with a large box and removable sidebiters.

In short, the rascal II has given me hope that my best days of surfing are still ahead of me.

•March 21, 2009 • Leave a Comment

…then, 2 days ago, I got my custom Proxy Rascal II, and everything’s changed.

howdy todd and charissa,

I’ve only been on the new rascal II for 2 days now,

but i wanted to take a second to tell you why

it’s already the best board I’ve ever had.

In short, the rascal II has given me hope

that my best days of surfing are still ahead of me.

let me explain…  I started surfing at 10yrs old and I surfed frequently until the age of 18.  at that point, I was very happy with how my surfing was progressing, but then i went to college, medical school, and residency training, and

the next thing I knew I was 31 yrs old, 30 lbs heavier and

had barely surfed at all in 13 years.

But then i moved to San Francisco, and, all of the sudden, I had the opportunity to start surfing consistently again.  that said,

i thought  that i could just buy a board and

i’d pick up surfing at exactly the level where i left off…

things didn’t quite work out that way though.

throughout the last year, it was becoming increasingly frustrating to paddle out day after day and not be able to surf as well as i remembered myself surfing when i was 18.  So, I made excuses for my poor performance; i told myself that the waves i was surfing just weren’t good for high performance type surfing and that i just wasn’t surfing on the right boards.  But one year and 4 surfboards later, doubt started creeping in and I was starting to feel that maybe it wasn’t the waves or the boards, perhaps it was just me, maybe the combination of my 13 year hiatus, my advancing age, and my worsening physical condition had amounted to some absolute diminution of talent;

I was starting to feel that i just wasn’t a good surfer

anymore and that feeling was becoming extremely disheartening.

…then, 2 days ago, I got my custom Proxy Rascal II,

and everything’s changed.

now, all of the sudden, i’m flying

down sections with confidence, making tight turns, busting out and sliding the tail, and i’ve even boosted a couple of airs (and I’ve been doing all of this in some pretty terrible waves).

For the first time in a very long time, i feel like

progression is inevitable and i’m happy again with my surfing,

and that is why the rascal II is the best board i’ve ever ridden.

sorry for being so verbose, but i can’t help but feel compelled to let you know how much i love the board.

consider  me a customer for life.

Thanks

The Rascal II

Yes, you guessed correctly; the Rascal II is an offspring of the original Lil’ Rascal. Don’t worry, it’s not meant to replace the trusty, tried and true design of the original Rascal….
It started as just some thoughts…..ideas for a new board design after contemplating just how much fun I’d had on my Lil’ Rascal over the last year and a half. So, here’s what I came up with….and you know what? ….it goes gangbusters:
Rascal II – I added a slight bit more curve in the last 12 inches of the nose rocker so it rails nice and tight in little nook and cranny pockets.
I put in a concave deck. It feels like your riding a skateboard and responds super quick edge-to-edge. The caved deck also gives you this insane feeling like you are riding “in” the board and “in“ the wave…you gotta just try it to understand what I mean. I also shaped in four “parabolic” (fancy for curved) channels that give extra lift, drive and directional hold. The moontail releases the water being compressed through the channels in a way that keeps the tail crisp and free to break it loose when you want to.
It has also been set-up to ride as either a quad or thruster…..keeping your fin options open. In a nutshell…..it’s more versatile, faster and looser; skates though the flats quicker, and surfs tighter and more responsive in the pocket than ever before.

Visit the Rascal II in the online surf shop. We deliver custom surfboards direct to surfers worldwide.

Hey Todd,

Just wanted to thank you again for all your

personal help in picking out the

perfect Lil’ Rascal…

and staying open late so I could drive up and pick it up.  I surfed it for the first time this  past Saturday down at churches, the south swell was lining up perfectly and

the Lil’ Rascal outperformed my expectations…

I’m sure I will see you again this year, I have my eye on the SR-71,  In the meantime, all the best and many thanks for shaping the perfect lil rascal..

By the way, both boards (Lil Rascal and G4E) have been insane lately.

The only board I think I need now is an SR-71 for those O/H days, but I am still saving for that one.  The new website is really nice too!  I dig it.  Talk to you soon and God bless.

Hey Todd,

The 6′ 2” Ante-Up went insane in Indo. I couldn’t believe how much speed it would be able to control on such powerful waves.

I recommend this board for any surfer’s quiver whose gonna be travelling to any location with powerful waves.

Thanks again,

Hey Todd,

I’ve been riding that new Greased Rascal the last two days while I’ve been down here in Venice… it goes insane!!

The waves have been small & week down here

and I’m just flying on this thing…

boosting huge airs, 360 reverses, everything… and  pullin ‘em.

My friends are trippin’ on me and this board.

It’s the perfect L.A. county south bay board

for the waves down here.

My buddy is coming up to the factroy with me on Saturday to get one.

Thanks Todd,

It is my main board for almost everything I encounter between Oxnard and Jalama

•March 7, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Hey Todd,

I am absolutely loving the quad board you made for me a year or two ago– #6902, 6’6″x19″x2.5″. If you recall, I’m 5’9″, about 158 lbs, and in really good shape.

It is my main board for almost everything

I encounter between Oxnard and Jalama.

It has really taken my riding up a huge amount– I am ripping all over the wave, turning much faster and harder,

able to take off better and really

get into the waves and take lines

I had always dreamed of but

couldn’t pull off.

It is so much fun pumping the board up and down the face, generating speed, then cutting hard on the top of the wave and on the bottom of the wave.  At Rincon I can take a big drop, make a nice bottom turn, and pump down the line and get around sections….all that great stuff I really struggled with before…

I have yet to find a situation where it feels

better as a thruster than as a quad.

It feels like the board paddles faster and also moves faster as a quad, and

probably because I am a front-footed surfer to a fault,

(years of skateboarding I guess), it never feels too loose for me.  My bottom turns have really progressed and gotten much more aggressive, so the quad does not feel too loose for my style and technique.

Despite my total satisfaction, I am wondering about a second board.  It would be a step-up board–

something that helps me paddle into bigger, juicier waves

like you can get on a good day at Tarantula’s– well overhead to double overhead.  I had really good luck with a Becker 7’6″ mini-gun thruster design up there– it got
the waves early, held great and caught the face even on almost vertical or air drops, and was very maneuverable once it was flying with the kind of speed that a big, powerful wave generates.  But I dinged that board (someone else dropped in on me and cut it up bad) and it was never the same after the repair (nose felt too heavy) so
I sold it.  I picked up a used 7′ Matt Moore thruster, and it feels great, but doesn’t seem to have enough volume and/or length to actually catch big waves very well.  I am a strong paddler but I have seen stronger out there, especially on North Shore Hawaii.  Even though the MM 7′ board is longer and probably has more volume, I think the 6’6″ quad board you made me actually paddles faster!  I  haven’t actually tried the 6’6″ at T’s on a bigger day, but  I probably will  try it until I have something else…

So I was at Jalama just yesterday, with well overhead to double overhead set waves, and I was using my Clyde Beatty Rocket Fish, approx 6’4″ length, big twin fin with tiny little baby trailer fins for a quasi-quad.  (I was expecting it to be smaller up there so I took  the Fish.  I was pleasantly surprised that real sets were still coming in, I guess you could  say.)  It had the huge advantage of paddling power for catching the waves, but of course felt too squirrelly to try any big moves- I had to be ginger with any bottom turns and carve careful lines.  Despite its loose, skatey feel, I have to say that I absolutely loved the extra paddle power I was getting with the Rocket Fish– reminded me of the extra paddle power I had been getting with the Becker mini-gun.

On top of that, I read all about Kelly’s exploits on this weird, tiny, thick board he made that is more or less a K-Step board with the nose cut off.  And I know that good riders are pulling into heavy waves like Pipe on boards way shorter than I would think could be used….so it raises the question, is it really more about total volume,
or is length also essential for holding on the wave during and after the drop?  Or, is wave face holding really more about rail/tail shape and fin setup?  Clearly, if Kelly can ride a 5’6″ or something board at places like Teahupoo and Pipe, length is perhaps not such a critical issue.  Tow-in boards are short, too, so by simple deduction I have to conclude that length is not the crucial factor for big-wave holding power– it’s really more for paddling power.  Then again, the tow-in boys don’t have to deal with vertical semi-air drops, either.  But, if a short, thick fish can have plenty of paddle power, maybe I don’t need a gun or mini-gun for bigger days when I mainly just need to paddle faster??

So, anyway, bottom line is I am kind of wondering whether something just a touch thicker, and/or a touch wider, and/or a touch more pin-ny in the tail, and/or with slightly bigger fins would be the ticket for a

step up board that would help me

in bigger, stronger waves, but that would

still feel a lot like the board you already made for me.

Something that would potentially perform as well as my 7’6 mini-gun, without actually being a minigun?  Something that is also good for a front- or center- footed surfer?  It shouldn’t feel too loose in a big, fast wave, but should feel loose enough in smaller waves, too.

Finally, why not just get a mini-gun?  Well, I guess I still am thinking there is a board out there that really should work well for me in almost anything I will  encounter here in So. Cal— if it’s just got a bit more paddle power than the board you already made for me, and holds well at high speed, then it should work in just about anything.  If it’s strictly designed for big waves, then I worry it will feel sluggish in the small stuff, and I will have to bring at least a two-board quiver on some of my surf quests.  I would
rather look at the buoy readings, make the call and pick one board, and if when I arrive at the surf spot it turns out I made the wrong board choice, the board still works pretty well.  One time I took the Becker to Jalama and it was way smaller than I was expecting– below head high with only Cracks working– and that board totally sucked in those conditions.

In fact, for now, I think on my next

big wave session I am just going to take

the 6’6″ board you made for me and

see if I can get the job done with that board….

I suspect that if I can paddle hard enough it will take great care of me once I’m on the wave.  Put it this way– I was way happier making do with a Rocket Fish on well overhead waves than I was making do with a 7’6″ mini-gun on shoulder high waves– the fish still made for an epic session and the mini-gun was total crap.

Of course, for a “step-up board” I would just as soon go with one of your more stock designs rather than a fully custom design if you think you have something that you would recommend.  I think I read somewhere that you are  combining one of your groveler designs with the Blackbird design…maybe something like that is the thing to go for?  Maybe a board with slightly more volume than the one you made for me, possibly with two different fin setups- bigger fins for well overhead,  and smaller ones for head high and below waves?  Anyway, I immediately thought of you because a) you already made one “magic board” for me; b) you are a very progressive shaper and are
thinking about these kinds of things; and c) I trust you to give sound advice and help me cut through the hype and confusion.

I have surfed Hawaii North Shore in double-overhead + at Haleiwa, Lani’s, and Chun’s, and I know first-hand that I will probably still  try to get hold of
a serious 8′ mini-gun or something when I am there, because those waves were insanely fast, thick, and powerful for their size– like nothing I’ve ever seen anywhere, and those boys over there can paddle like nothing I’ve ever seen before, too.  But I am starting to think that there is a more conventional board shape that should
work well for me in just about everything that we see here, even on our biggest west swells– something that is not necessarily a mini-gun or gun design.
Granted, those North Shore boys are on a whole different level–they were still using boards about a foot shorter than me and doing just fine….so I realize that it’s not just the surfboard, it’s the surfer, too.  If I could paddle like a pro or a North Shore local I probably could do it all on the board you already made for me.  But I’m just an
intermediate surfer, don’t do contests, and am

looking for a board that works for me,

not a board that works for a pro.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing your thoughts–

Month of the Shaper: Todd Proctor

Editor’s Note: In conjunction with our annual Surfboards Issue (On newsstands Nov. 18), we will be posting one interview per day with a craftsman who contributed to the issue. Some are the biggest names in the bay; others are underground and want to keep it that way. But all of them share an equal passion for the crafts that move us forward. In these tough economic times, they all have a lot to say on where their craft is going. This time: Ventura’s Todd Proctor. – to read this interview on the Surfing Magazine website, click here

Specialty: Custom – anything and everything

IS YOUR BUSINESS BETTER OR WORSE SINCE THE CLARK FOAM SHUTDOWN?

Better

DO YOU FEEL POLYURETHANE FOAM/POLYESTER RESIN WILL ALWAYS BE THE DOMINANT SURFBOARD CONSTRUCTION?

There are a lot of possibilities out there for materials with increased durability and performance, and which are far more environmentally friendly. I make it a priority to constantly be trying, experimenting and innovating with different materials.

DO YOU THINK THERE’S AN INCREASING OR DECREASING APPRECIATION FOR A CUSTOM SURFBOARD?

There’s an increasing demand for quality, custom boards that take each individual surfer to the places they dream of going on a wave. I think there will always be a demand for something unique and special like that.

ARE QUADS DECLINING OR INCREASING IN POPULARITY?

They’ve got there niche….and they do what they do well.

WHAT’S KEEPING YOU AFLOAT? CUSTOM CLIENTELE? SHOP ACCOUNTS? SURFTECH?

Attention to the individual surfer.

IF IT HASN’T ALREADY, WILL YOUR SURFBOARD PRODUCTION EVER HAVE TO GO OVERSEAS?

By the goodness and grace of God, I plan to continue to see my business grow right here in Ventura. Personally, I love shaping boards and I enjoy hard work. This is what I was created to do. I like the fact that something quality is made right here in this country, and that I am able to provide jobs right here to a crew that has the same level of care and desire to put out the best boards we are capable of.

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO WHEN YOU SHAPE?

Usually I’ll listen to preachers all day on the radio, but sometimes I’ll move the dial around to classic rock, news, classical music, oldies…I like a lot of different sounds….my current favorite right now though is a new album by Dominic Balli called Public Announcement….that one makes my soul soar!

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND ON A SINGLE BOARD NOW?

Sometimes 30 minutes; sometimes two hours….whatever it takes for it to be right.

DO YOU SPEND MORE TIME ON THE COMPUTER SCREEN OR IN THE SHAPING BAY?

About 60% of the time shaping and 40% designing. I really enjoy designing boards, so sometimes I think I spend a little too much time doing that….but I really like the hands on of fine-tuning the boards too.

HOW IMPORTANT IS TEAMRIDER FEEDBACK TO YOU?

It’s really important….but I think of my team as everyone that I shape boards for; be it a ‘CT guy, a mom, a local ripper, a granddad longboarder. There are so many different surfers, each one needing different boards to cater to their unique style and the types of waves they ride….so I make it a point to listen to everybody and pay close attention to each persons requests and feedback. I find it makes for a solid surfer/ shaper relationship that way, too.

WHAT KIND OF BOARD DO YOU ENJOY SHAPING MOST RIGHT NOW?

I love them all. Rght now, I guess I would have to say the last board I just got done shaping.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET TO SURF?

When the waves are good….but sometimes when they are bad too. As much as I can.

ARE YOU ACTIVELY PURSUING “GREENER” AVENUES IN YOUR SURFBOARD PRODUCTION?

Yes….for over a decade now. Check out our website at proctorsurf.com. There is all kinds of stuff you can get stoked about there….more than I could summarize real quick for you in one sentence here.

featured board model: Big Chief shortboard

•February 18, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Product Specs:

Dimensions: 6’10″ x 21″ x 3″
Tail Shape: squash tail
Construction: polyester
Fins: comes with Future Fins, AM2

surfer feedback

Todd,
I just returned from Rincon Puerto Rico. I scored great waves at Maria’s and Domes(solid 6-8). I used the board that you made for me this past Spring. I had the best sessions I have had yet do in large part because of the magic board. I had a major break through in my surfing and I can’t tell you how excited I am about that. I will be ordering another board from you this Spring.
Thanks again.

Hey Todd,
Been awhile since I bought this board but I wanted to let you know that I took it out for a session and was pleased with the results.  A few warm ups and it was like I was back to my old surfing self when I was 17 and on.  The board is a great blend of old and new.  A great feel.
A highlight for me was a floater over a section, and a close out hack.  OH what FUN!
I’ll be up in the next few months to pick up another board for my trip to the Mentawais in May.
All the best,
Kelly Foran

Hi Todd,
I love my new board! I just wanted to thank you and everyone at Proctor Surfboards for building me a great board. I am convinced this board is made of the finest materials and represents the finest quality workmanship available today. I especially appreciate the time you took discussing the design with me so the board will work the way I expected. You shaped me a board that works for me for the type of surfing I do. From the first wave I caught I got very positive feedback that built my confidence in the board while feeling a very fast and loose board under my feet that wanted to get up and go. I also get many compliments on the airbrush work. It really turned out nice.
Thanks again. I look forward to many good sessions on my new Proctor surfboard.

surfer mag shaper interview with todd proctor

Surfboard Label:

a. Head shaper(s):

Todd Proctor

b. History of surfboard label:

(Year founded, home base, any claims to fame.)

I started Proctor Surfboards in 1992 with the primary focus on the custom approach to surfboard design. The use of innovation in construction methods and materials has also played a major role.

If I had to choose one thing as my greatest claim to fame it is that

at Proctor Surfboards every surfer is treated with the same level of respect and attention whether you are a grom getting your first board, a pipeline specialist, a WCT elite, or a weekend warrior.

Attention to the individual surfer, which is a two-fold process, begins with asking the right questions and listening, then building the board that is going to best take them in the direction they want to go with their surfing.

Also, putting in the necessary time with each board is key….you never want to sacrifice by rushing through a board; every surfer/ every board is as important as the next; as well, never cutting corners on what materials to use or the best methods of construction….

I do not believe in engineered obsolescence.

Use premium materials and be a craftsman with impeccable technique – These are simple principles and the trademarks that have seen my company grow exponentially, mostly by word of mouth, not based on a conjured image marketed to appeal as the “next cool thing”, but as something real that has been forged through many years of hard work and dedication to core principles.

There are so many different types of surfers from locations all over the world ordering boards from us; and to be able to make each board unique, special and dialed to the particular waves they are surfing, their experience,

and to help them push on to the next level they want to go with their surfing….

man, it’s what gets me pumped….

makes me feel like I’m doing what is right and good in a world that just wants to increase output and profit while decreasing quality and variety.

This type of thing can never be done by offering A,B and C models of boards and telling surfers, “Well these are the sizes they come in; find one that’s a close fit.”…..you don’t find your magic board by plugging in to a height and weight chart either; it’s not like getting a new pair of socks….

I find that surfers are realizing more and more the importance of customization, the surfer/ shaper relationship and innovation with construction methods.

c. Early shaping influences:

(schooled with or under: where does this shaper or label belong on the shaper’s tree.)

I shaped my first 100 or so boards in a woodshed behind my grandfather’s house in the early 90’s. The first four boards I shaped, I brought to McCrystal Surfboards (then in Oxnard) to get glassed. Not knowing what to expect from the crew there, I was pretty timid thinking I might be the butt of some jokes. Instead, Casey (McCrystal – the owner and head shaper) said that if these are the first four boards you’ve ever shaped then “I had it”. That people either have it as a shaper or you don’t, and that he thought this was my gift and that I could make a living out of shaping boards. It was probably the single most encouraging thing anyone has ever told me that I took to heart as far as life’s work goes.

Casey offered me a job there at his factory, I took it and learned many things there at that factory. Some time after that, I met Matt Biolos at a trade show in Florida, he was also very encouraging and we had a really cool connection talking about boards. Matt offered me a job working with him in San Clemente….. moved there and that is where I first really cut my teeth getting to handshape custom boards.

I believe hand shaping boards plays an incredibly valuable role in learning to break down the dynamics of board design.

Much like an architect, draftsman, an illustrater, or cartoonist, or even an automobile car body designer will work by hand to develop the skill of their eye and their technique before ever moving on to computer modeling programs…..

So for shapers coming into the industry back then anyway, that is just how it was.

I don’t know if that really exists the same way for shapers getting into it now.

Matt was very kind to me letting me stay at his little apartment until I could get on my feet and setting me up with a shaping room in what felt like the heart of the shaping world for me at that time….San Clemente’s ’shapers alley’. It was a neat time in my life shaping-wise and Matt served up on a silver platter many pros for me to work with; sending over guys like a young Bruce Irons, Shea Lopez, Casey Curtis, Dino Andino, and a bunch of up and comers whose names I didn’t recognize back then… Aaron Cormican, Kalani Chapman, Otto Flores, etc. ended up on my contractor’s slip….there was a lot of Mayhem going on back then.

As there are season’s in life,

eventually I felt my heartstrings pulling

for Ventura where in my youth

I had fallen in love with Rincon

and the right points there, the beauty of the open coast and the breath of the farmfields that stretched on for miles. I also had a vision for a state of the art factory there dedicated to building highest quality, custom surfboards.

Your notable test pilots:

a. Most important feedback of late regarding the immediate future of boards?

My feedback is gathered from many different types of surfers…..and here is one reason why:

Typically, year after year it seems to me you have the same type of thing going when this question is asked. And the answer from shaper’s usually goes something like this, “Well, my teamrider so and so just won such and such contest and has this and that ratings which has placed them in the very special category of position in surfing’s ranking system of high esteem….they really like this type of board and have done well….they’re feedback has been very positive.” – (insert shaper name).

I am not bashing that; in fact I think it’s pretty sick for a surfer and shaper to accomplish success together; each at what they do best.

I feel I’ve been called to judge a more varied

and wider array of feedback from

more of a cross-section of today’s surfers…

than to draw all my ideas and inspiration from a narrow percentage of just one small group of surfers.

So, for me my most important feedback comes from

surfers that envision themselves as on

a journey with their surfing

where they want to get to that next level; to go the places they dream of going on a wave.

They are not the type of surfers that feel they have “arrived” with their surfing and that order their shaper around like a slave. Mutual respect is equally as important as a surfer’s raw talent.

So, the best feedback I receive comes from
surfers who have a good, positive attitude,
desire to better their surfing, and can communicate well.

Most of these surfers have names that the surfing world at large does not know; guys like Greg Strugach, a goofie-foot powerhouse from the rippable lined-up points of Malibu; Jay Rice from the Trestles wave gamut of San Clemente, Forrest Troxell from the right cylinder reefs of Maui, Ted Takai from Oahu’s town and country wave variety; Vincent Tourtoulou from France’s punchy green beachbreaks; stoked Niall Carlin from Ireland; James Robertson from the UK; Craig Potsep from Spain, Fillippo Togno from Italy’s Mediterranean surf community, and core, travelin’, surfin’ dad – Mauricio Paredes from Miami;  Bryan Andersen from Canada, Nancy Masters, a new mom from Ventura; prime-of-lifer Tony Beck from South Africa; mellow on land, on fire in the water Larry Ugale who rides a longboard like 90% of shortboarders wish they could ride their little boards; Guillaume Fontaine from the Netherlands; Andrew Greene, a Balinese transplant from Australia; Yuki Kurita from Japan; Petey Mussio from Lompoc’s sharky, thumping beachbreaks; Rob Kenworthy, an Arnold’s Road barrel stategist; Michael Bailey with style to burn inside Pt. Mugu heavers; Dean Faris – middle age bucket thrower and Dad to four in Oceanside; Rob Bent, Pitas Point Rascal ripper and Indo adventurer; Chargin’ Stephen Carson, my brother on a mission in San Diego…..and many others, I wish I could name them all and describe them because to me it’s like a big family. These are real people/ real names and faces…..they are the fabric that the larger tapestry of the true cross-section that represents the worldwide surfing community. These surfers come in all shapes, sizes and skill levels just like the custom boards they ride.

And equally important are surfers whose names you do recongnize….guys like Jarrah Tutton a RVCA ripper and insane barrel rider from Australia, Danny Estes, a Texas turned Florida turned Ventura local who knows how to combine the railwork of an oldschool power base with the new era tail whip thing. There’s Tamayo Perry, a CHARGER of the scariest pits on tap; and Mick Fanning, whose feedback on some boards from more than a year ago is still revolutionizing my heavy gouging design concepts. There’s the original  Coolie kid Jay Phillips, whose Gold Coast-meets-a-modern-day-Tom Curren style pushed the design envelope of multiple different board models. Those are a few surfers whose unique styles and approaches represent a much larger group which I gain feedback from….the larger group being each person I design boards with.

b. Most of my top guys are riding _______.

When it comes to a new design, or for testing new concepts, I make all my prototype boards out of polyester/ polyurethane. I do use a unique iso/ ortho blended polyester resin that is the strongest combination you can have for polyester resin. It is also light cured so the boards are fully cured and ready go the same day they come through production. Combined with the higher strength-to-weight ratio fiberglass that we use i.e. Direct Size cloth and S-glass, you get a polyester board that is significantly stronger than any other polyester board out there….and it has reached its full cure strength the day its ready for pickup; really good when you want to get on a board straight away and plan to ride the heck out of it. Once a prototype has been deemed “magic”, then we take the computer file that the magic board was designed from and we make another one, but this time we make it out of our

unique custom Proxy (Proctor flexible epoxy v.2).

This is the premium board I make for both performance and strength.

The Proxy’s are 2-3 times stronger so the life span of the board is 2-3 times longer than a standard polyester board. As well, the materials keep their flex life/ memory 2-3 times longer than a polyester board; so they stay springy and lively under your feet much longer. They also have recyclable components and the resin is much better for the environment. All of the materials involved in the construction of the Proxy are higher grade so the cost is a bit more, but it is definitely worth it.

What’s the best way to identify the gap between a customer’s wants and true needs?

By asking the appropriate questions, listening carefully to their answers, then

making an accurate assessment of where they are at with their surfing

and what design is going to best take
them in the direction they want to go.

I don’t expect surfers to know all the technical design stuff and the nuances regarding outline, rocker, bottom contours, rail shape, tail shape, thickness flow, foil, etc…

If I have never worked with a person before and they are ordering their first board from me, I usually start by asking the basics like what is your height, weight, age, how long have you been surfing? How often do you get to surf? What would you say your experience level is? What are the waves like where you surf; or what type of waves do you need this board for? What are the basic dimensions of the boards you are coming off of? Describe how you surf/ your typical approach to a wave/ how you like to surf (everyone is different here so it is important to really listen); and finally I ask them the direction they want to go with their surfing/ what they dream of doing on a wave.

I find it is very important when analyzing this information, to not come into a consultation like this with preconceived notions, or an

agenda to make a certain type of board

because it happens to be the design trip

you are on at the moment.

Sometimes you happen to be honing a new design with great results and it perfectly suits what that surfer needs….that’s cool, but as a shaper you always want to make sure to apply the right board design to what is going to be best for the surfer. And as a surfer looking for the magic board, you also don’t want to come into a consultation with a shaper with preformed ideas that are set in concrete with no budge room for your new board. Over the years I’ve heard people say, “the customer is always right.” In surfboards that is not always the case, it is the job of the shaper to be the professional in their field, and to bring the surfer along, to educate and explain why a certain design is going to work better for them then another.

At the end of the day, customization is the most important quality to have in your surfboard. Here’s why…
A well thought out board design made by a professional who takes the time to make the board that is going to be the best for you

will take your surfing to the next level.

Nothing can take the place of that.

Customization affects not only the physical form and shape of the board, but it also delves design into the use of new materials and new processes for building that board; this in turn tunes in the flex characteristics, the memory and spring of the materials through turns and out of maneuvers. It is the glue that bonds a longer lasting, environmentally friendlier surfboard to a responsible culture and a greener environment.

Customization is the key

to pushing the limits forward in a

positive direction for surfing

and how surfers ride waves into the future.

If I had only three boards that had to last me through the entire recession I’d choose the following: ________ Explain the logic behind each.

That is a very hard question….kind of like asking you which of your children to give life jackets to when the ship is going down. I love them all; they each have their own unique personalities with the waves they are made for, but if I could only choose three it would be

The Rascal II for really small weak waves where you don’t want to resort to a longboard, and you still want to speed and throw down turns.

The second would be an

Accelerator because it is the shortboard you can take out in 80% of the waves we get here in California

and it does not let you down whether it is knee high or overhead, mushy or hollow; it is a really fast board that generates it’s own speed in small waves, yet will surf real quick and tight in the pocket on pushback days; turns on a dime too.

The last board would be an SR-71

with a round tail,an inch or two bigger than the Accelerator. This board has a little more rocker throughout;

this would be for the really good,
performance days….

there is nothing like this board when the waves are on – super fast, super smooth, drivey down the line, loose in the pocket…the perfect good waves board.

The most exciting thing about surfboard technology right now is?

Variety and options available to surfers like never before. Never have I seen a wider variety of surfboard shapes and technologies available to surfers. Surfers are finding out what works best for them and that is technology benefitting surfers…..I think that’s exciting.

If  [ _________ ] went away I think the future of design would be much better.

If  needy egos and attitudes of entitlement

went away

I think the future of design

would be much better.

I have been blessed with clients that are really stoked, enthusiastic, and supportive of the way we go about board building. The niche I have in this industry is a relatively small one comparatively….I am happy with that anddo not desire to grow to the point where I am twice removed from the actual people I am making boards for.

I enjoy the personal side of it.

So, I guess you could say I am sheltered in a way from what goes on out there in the dog-eat-dog world of who’s who; and the energies that are spent on striving how to make your indelible mark as a member of the inner circle.

But, I do see what goes on out there and there are some things that concern me for the future of board design. Sure, I guess you could say, “let’s take away cheap Chinese labor, or get rid of molded board technology … or let’s not allow another Clark Foam to sweep in and monopolize any area of the surfboard world.”, but that doesn’t really strike at the heart of the issue.

I think it is always good to take a look at our motivations; why do we do what we do? I see a cycle that has gone on for some time that is detrimental to the progression of surfboard design. I see it as a two-fold issue: the first being that there is a mentality out there with many surfers (including those that own many a surf shop) that shapers ought to work for next to nothing and give bro deals to anyone who surfs halfway decently well or knows so and so. I have seen more shapers than I care to mention that have skipped out on paying taxes, run a factory way under code, skimped on materials quality, held out on paying their employees what they ought, put in long hours year after year resulting in their wives leaving them…..and for what? So surfers can have a board made for them for so cheap that they can say to other people yea, I’m that good….I get my board for such and such a price.

This ain’t cool….and it stems from an entitlement mindset which is very sad to me. The other side of this is the shapers. More often than not, I believe shapers want so bad to see their boards out and about that they are willing to play into what I call the

“more more cheaper cheaper” death cycle

of board building…..

this is an over needy ego that thinks it’s going to be satisfied by catering to people that will, in the end leave for the next cheaper or cooler image driven thing.

This whole ugly cycle hinders good boards from being built.

It results in less hours for the shaper

to spend on dialing boards in

and it breeds poor quality work in employees that build the boards, and

it drives the use of quality materials and innovation out the door.

I believe that this is the reason we have all this China talk going on. Because the margins have been pushed to breaking in many cases and so a foolish alternative has been found in Chinese industry for the simple fact that board manufacturers won’t have to pay them as much to build the boards, and because pollution regulations/ requirements are low to nil there.

Surfboard innovation comes from surfboard shapers/ designers innovating with the surfers they make boards for and have a good relationship with.

Greased Pig
Designed for performance surfing in between swells. Concaves all the way through…deepest at the fins… keeps it running fast in the small stuff. Stinger swallowtail makes for more pronounced hip and pivot point to release water and increase looseness. Uses boxy rails to push back in turns. Everything the high performance shortboards do in the good waves this board does in the crud. Ridden 3-4 inches shorter and 1/4″ to 1/2″ wider.

Todd will specify the variation on this design during order process. Formerly know as the “LeVee”.

A speed machine for chest high waves and smaller; This is the type of board that you drive like a race car….it’s going fast so all you gotta’ do is hang on and steer. It has a low entry rocker for quick paddling, ease catching waves, and increased lift in small/ flatter faced waves. The bottom has a single concave that transitions into a pronounced spiral vee that carries off the tail. This hull design carries excellent trim speed and gives the tail a very free feeling in the small stuff. The rails are fuller and boxier with a forgiving edges that are softly blended into the bottom. You can ride this board 2-3 inches shorter, 1/2” – 3/4” wider, and 1/8” thicker than your standard shortboard.

Todd, here is my feedback on the 6’4” LeVee Flexible Epoxy. By the way, got the extra fin screws from you today. Thank you for excellent customer service.

Todd, took delivery of the 6’4” LeVee and let it cure just as you instructed. Here is my comments.

I found the LeVee to be generally very fast and highly maneuverable. The most satisfying thing I can say about the board is that it is very responsive in the tube or any portion of the wave when it became a steep vertical face. That alone made me very happy, as my ability to stay in the tube is somewhat mediocre at best. Also, getting bounced off the bottom on a bad shoulder makes one generally skittish about getting hammered by the lip. The board paddles acceptably well for such a small board. It catches waves well.

This flexible epoxy construction really seems to work.

I can actually feel the board loading under (flexing) on the bottom turn, and then when it releases the flex, feeling the “spring” spit me out of the turn.

That part is really unique to my experience. Kinda like skiing or snowboarding.

It seems durable under my rough handling. It definitely springs back with energy, which is something I have never dealt with before (will take some getting used to, but that is a good thing!).

This board shape and the construction rates a 10 – 10, 10 being best. Thanks for a great product. I look forward to using the flexible epoxy 7’2” West Peak/Big Chief on my overseas trip this year.

I can only imagine what a really good surfer must be able to do with this shape and this construction. This is a quality product.

Believe it or not after all this time I just now got to take the New Board out. The Board is truly awesome.

Just as advertized it catches waves easy and in head high surf is a Rocket Ship.

I did purchase a set of VF467 Foil Tech Fins. The board absolutely accelerates thru turns.
Hopefully this weekend I can have some pictures taken and will attach.

Thanks Again,

Hey Todd:

Been awhile since I picked up the boards, but I wanted to let you know that they both work unreal.
I have never had boards that are so light and responsive as this.  Especially like the Pig and have surfed it in head high waves.  Been on that board alot.  Waiting for a little more juice to get the Accelerator going, but so far I am totally satisfied.  I think you dialed in exactly what I needed in both boards and it feels like my surfing has gone to the next level.  The rest of my boards are just
collecting dust right now!

And thanks for the personal service.  Best custom service I have had.  You have a great operation and I like that fact that you treat everyone with equal respect and attention.  I will be coming back for more, if these Proxy’s ever give out!

Off to Costa Rica next month and will send you some photos.
Best to you and Charissa.

Rascal II

Rascal II

THE PROXY

Proctor Custom Flexible Epoxy version 2.0

- Stronger than before, lighter than before, with an even more responsive/ longer lasting flex memory -

Made from materials designed for the highest performance surfing possible – utilizes specific flex patterns to increase the board’s torque through turns.
Stronger than the molded boards (i.e. Boardworks, Surftech, etc…)
Lighter than traditional p/u boards (polyurethane)
Custom designed…no pop-outs.
Now with unlimited custom graphics options.

The Proxy….definition. – Custom epoxy surfboard that matches the flex and performance advantages of a polyester board with strength that surpasses the molded pop-out boards.

This is our latest development in the flexible epoxy series.
We begin with an ultra-lightweight epoxy “fusion Core” for the shaped blank – a uniquely formulated eps that has been fused under higher pressures to achieve greater compression strength and less ‘worm holes’ (i.e open pores typical with standard eps foams. These open pores, or worm holes add unnecessary weight due to water or resin absorption into the blank.) The “Fusion Core” does not suck in water, or bubble or delaminate over time like other custom epoxy core materials are prone to do.

I custom shape and design each board on the DSD surfboard cad design program.

This allows me to use my most proven shapes to further customize the perfect board for each surfer. Through personal discussion and interaction, I am able to determine each surfers’ height, weight, experience, the type of waves they surf, and the direction they want to take their surfing. I have always believed that plain old communication is an integral part of the design process.

The glassing is done with premium grade S-glass (the best fiberglass for yielding the highest strength-to-weight surfboards). Strategically placed flex points, or hinges are added at this stage as well. We are offering two performance enhancing upgrades to the new PROXY line….I’m calling this the Titanium Series. Upgrades include: (1) reinforced carbon-hinge flex tail and/ or (2) Kevlar deck compression patch.

The epoxy resin used in the process is also uniquely formulated to have more elongation, or flex than is typically characteristic of most epoxies. This is very important to how a board rides.

The best surfboards flex and recoil back out of turns…..

they flex lengthwise as well as side-to-side along the board….this is the “spring”, the “life” that you feel in a magic board. No matter how great the shape of a board may be, you kill it if you build it so it rides stiff and rigid.

Each board is made from start to finish here in our Ventura factory.

This allows me and the Proctor Surfboards crew to ensure that the highest level of attention and quality is put into every board.

you said it would transform my surfing, and you were completely right

Hey Todd & Charissa,

Just wanted to send you a quick note on the G-4.E I picked up from you just before Christmas. All I can say is that I absolutely love the board.

When I picked it up you

said it would transform my surfing,

and you were completely right.

I feel like my surfing has progressed more in the past month and a half than it had in the prior six.

The board paddles super easy, but still feels so nimble. I can dig the rails in so quick now, my bottom turn has never been so solid. Going backside was always a bit iffy,

now I’m nailing my backside

bottom turn every time.

Oh and the epoxy is definitely living up to its rep. I took the board down to Brazil a couple of weeks ago. Too many flights to remember, but not a single ding on the board! Anyway just wanted to say thanks to both of you again.

The board is just awesome, and the

whole ordering process was super easy.

I’ll be coming back for more!

Regards,
Steve

Salt Creek proved no match for the tube threading ability of the Proxy 6’4″ Ante-Up Quad you shaped me

Hey Todd & Charissa,

The waves of November and December at Salt Creek have proved no match for the tube threading ability of the Proxy 6′4″ Ante-UP Quad you shaped me!

The board is excellent and rides equally well as a thruster or quad.  I have run FCS: PC-5 quad set and the FCS: TC Aqualine 5 fin set as a thruster and quad. The PC-5 quad makes the board hold on anything and i’m taking off way deeper than I’ve ever pushed it and they seem to draw out your turns (I prefer these on the more powerful days.) The Aqualine’s make the board much looser and even though your riding a 6′4″ it turns on dime and feel’s like a 6′0″.

The board is the best i’ve ever ridden!

Thanks for listening to the little guys out there and treating us all like family!

Hey Todd,
Been awhile since I bought this board but I wanted to let you know that I took it out for a session and was pleased with the results.  A few warm ups and it was like I was back to my old surfing self when I was 17 and on.  The board is a great blend of old and new.  A great feel.

A highlight for me was a floater over a section,

and a close out hack.

OH what FUN!

I’ll be up in the next few months to pick up another board for my trip to the Mentawais in May.
All the best,

surfer feedback

Todd & Charissa,

Our boards got here yesterday. I was really stoked when I saw mine and couldn’t wait to get it wet. The timing couldn’t have been any better either. All last week was flat and today a pretty good bump came in. We had about a four hour clean head high session. The board performed just as I imagined,it felt as if it were an extension of body.

I came in and I’m resting now. The afternoon should be a little onshore and about chest. I think I’ll give it a run as a twin. I haven’t retired the long but I don’t it’ll be seeing action for a while.

Muchos Thanks,

Andrew Durham

For when the waves are getting a bit bigger and punchier than your regular shortboard can handle

Ante Up: 6’6″ x 18 3/8″ x 2 5/16″

Ante Up
For when the waves are getting a bit bigger and punchier than your regular shortboard can handle. The Ante Up is that little extra you need to get into bigger waves easier and maintain the balance of speed and stability necessary to rip on the overhead dream days. The rocker has an even bend from nose to tail. The bottom features a slight single-to-double concave bottom with a touch of subtle vee off the back fin for drive and a positive hold through turns. The deck is a bit more domed and foiled down to the rail. This keeps most of the volume of the board under the chest for paddling while keeping a lower volume fine-tuned rail for lightning responsiveness. Thumbtails and rounded pins handle the power best.

All guns customized according to locations to be surfed.

Surfed in 7′-10′ Anchor Point. Now this board was such an amazing ride. Paddleing out on that big day with new board I was a little concerned. But as soon as I made it out the back a wave popped up just in front of me. And from the the paddle in to the finish, I just shat myself!!!! Paddled in soooo easy and early and once to my feet was no kidding and I hate the expression, ‘like a magic carpet ride.’ The board had so much speed and control, glided around sections easily, turning off the bottom was always controlable, was unlike any board I had ever ridden.
For the next 2 hours I had one of the best sessions of my life on that board

and can only wait to ride it once again.

As for the office side of your buisness, I found Charissa very helpful and pleasant. Her side was as good as the boards you made me.

I have to say that when I find myself back in Cali and I need a new board I will definetly be giving you a call for my next shape.

Cheers Todd and Charissa

Hey Todd and Charissa,
This is Scot Masters Calling. Ya’ know…I hadn’t had a chance to get back to you, but I wanted to thank you so much for the awesome boards….man…..the Ante Up that I got….everything from the omission of the words ‘Big Chief’ to bringing it down under 20 inches wide, the thing is like, I don’t’ know…

I mean you can have a dream board and you can have a dream board…but I think this is definitely one of my dream boards.

I caught a wave to almost double overhead, head-and-a-half out at Mussel Shoals, good 15 foot sections or about 5 yards, just doubling up warping wave – and the board just glides like a dream. So anyway, I wanted to give you some feedback.

Nancy is just totally stoked on her 6’8”. She just loves it.

She says it’s even looser than her other board, I don’t know how that is, but she loves it – absolutely loves it.

So, thank you, thank you , thank you.

Went out on a big day out at Gun Turrets too – it was about a head and a half, and I caught some bombs on it, and it just didn’t have any problem at all pushing me over the ledge, and holding the rail on the wall, so thank you so much!
I hope you guys are doing great.
I’ll talk to you soon.
Bye.

Todd,

I wanted to call right away, cause I just got out of the water & I got to ride the 7′2″.
Everyone was crowding the right @ Backdoor,
and I saw some good ones nobody was going for @ Pipe, so I swung into a few.

On the first wave, I took off & thought I was way too deep,
so I railed into it a little &

felt the board take-off like I’ve never

felt a board accelerate in the barrel before.

I’m stoked,

we are on to a good track already

with these first boards…

not bad for just talking over what I needed on the phone.

By the way, I surfed Newport River Jetties yesterday on peaky knee-waist on the 6.4 Proctor LeeVee and my good friend from Hurley was astonished at the speed I was getting on these little waves. I am attaching a couple to give you an idea of what fun I had on your boards.

Todd/ Charissa

Groveler IV.p [performance]

this is the most versatile shortboard I make…

My most versatile and well received new shortboard design. This is a very fast design that generates it’s own speed when it’s small, yet holds in and rails tight arcs in the pocket when it’s overhead. The rocker has a flatter area between the feet combined with an even, flowing single-to-inset double concave bottom. This creates a rail line that runs straighter from under the front foot to the lead-in fins, giving the board quick bursts of speed and incredible drive around sections. There is a good amount of tail rocker and release coming off the back fin allowing for lightening quick, explosive turns.

Todd / Charissa,

Sorry it took so long for me to write but it was awhile before we received some good swell for me to give the board a going over and since then

I have been having the most fun in my life surfing with it.

But before I get to the board I wanted to thank you for the most impressive service I’ve seen in awhile. You both were easily accessible, I never had to wait long for any sort of response to
questions and I felt the service was done with a smile. From Todd calling me in Spain and taking his time to discuss the board with me to Charissa keeping me updated on its progress, the service was high class all the way.

Now about the board….First off it looks totally sick.potsep1.jpg

The kevlar looks awesome as does the greyish color from the glassing. Combined with the digital camo that you put on the bottom of the board it looks totally insane. I received tons of looks and comments about how incredible it looks and needless to say I love it.

As for the performance,I don’t know what you do Todd but you mustcast a spell or sprinkle magic dust over it or something because thishands down performs better then any other board I have tried.

I thought after reading your testimonials that maybe it was just a lot of hype but no – the board actually contains the properties of magic.
It almost feels like it is spring loaded just waiting to be fired. The best part about it has to be the way it handles turns as this is when it really shows its quality. The speed you get when coming off of the top of the lip is incredible.

You can feel the board ’spring’ off of the top and it feels a little like a sling shot.

I can’t stress enough how much better this aspect of the board is compared to other boards I’ve ridden. I seriously feel like I’m “flying” coming off the lip and down the face. Since I have had the board I feel like I have taken my surfing to a new level and I’m having way more fun in the water.

I also feel like you listened during our consultation interview to what I needed. The board is a nice balance for taking my surfing a level up yet keeping in mind my level of experience and size.

You shaped it spot on.

Anyway I couldn’t have asked for anything more and you can count me as your customer for life. I’ve attached a photo of the underside of the board and will send some more when I can get some shots of it in the water. Keep up the great work and service. If you guys ever head to Spain or Portugal let me know and maybe we can meet up and ride a few.

Muchas gracias por todo. Mis mejores deseos.

Todd,

I think you nailed it. This one is alive. Keeping it a bit straight between the feet really gets it going quickly. It’s almost like I gain speed in tighter areas and don’t need as much room to drive it, lets me keep a higher line effortlessly. It compliments the increased tail rocker perfectly. After hitting the lip I’m going from 12:00 to about 4:00. The first few times caught me by surprise.
There’s nothing like a big hack when you know everyone saw it.

Cutbacks are really tight as well. A minor shift in weight is all it needs.

After 20 or so sessions I’m having a blast with it.
It’s been a while since I’ve been this connected to a board.

Thanks a bunch and God Bless.

yeah Todd….

The new boards are amazing I just got back from the goldcoast I got some sick waves.
I have only been riding the Blackbird and the groveller so far.

The groveler is like a skate board
so loose and fast,

I have been shredding the Bondi shorey’s on it.

The blackbird held in so good on the more punchy waves

at d’ bah and snapper

I could push it as hard as I wanted and it would hold its rail…

EPIC STUFF!

I will let you know how the rest go when I get some more swell…

Im going to go do some whip in airs this week so I should get some nice shots.

Thanks for the boards!!!!!!!

perfect ladies or kids mini longboard for christmas gift

•December 5, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Mini Longboard:

perfect for ladies, kids, and smaller surfers

All of the longboard line is available as a scaled-down model for smaller surfers or kids. The average longboard at 9’0″ x 22 1/4″ x 2 7/8″ is too big for a lot of kids to even get under their arm and scary to have coming back at them when taking a spill.

And for petite ladies the mini-longboard is easier to manage and maneuver.

The board featured here is 7’6″ x 21″ x 2 1/2″ and perfectly suits the 75-120 lb surfer.

for small wave ripping

Hey Todd and Charissa,

I hope all is well!

I wanted to suggest a nickname for the Accelerator – “The Preserver”, because that’s what this board is doing to all of my other boards on the rack.  It’s like the MVP player that is getting played the whole game, while the rest sit there sadly waiting their turn. If it’s less than ideal conditions, the Accelerator is coming out!  It flies in anything from knee high to slightly overhead and turns on a dime!  I haven’t ridden any other board in the entire rack since I picked it up from you over a month ago.  Every time I stand in front of my quiver, the Accelerator calls to me, almost glowing from the pack, reminding me of how many waves I catch, the speed it generates, the turns, and how no wave seems to be a close out on this board.  Though I know winter swells will bring out the Blackbird and SR71s, for now, the fall doldrums are perfectly fine since I found the Accelerator!

I had a contest 2 weekends ago and didn’t even bring any other boards other than the Accelerator and I usually bring minimum of 3-4.  I made the finals again, by the way!

Thanks so much for the support!  Take care and God Bless!

Paul Pence, Cardiff, CA

Todd, that new Accelerator you shaped me is sick!
You are a true craftsman… it shows in your boards as well as your artwork

I can’t thank you enough.
I look at this board as a true step to take me to the next level and thats what I’ve been searching for.

As you know I’ve ridden all the top shapers boards out there and the difference with you is being able to be in direct contact with you, as well as your commitment to producing the board I was looking for.

Thanks for walking it like you talk it, you and Charissa are really cool people.

My only regret is not contacting your company a few years ago.

When I get my SR71 I want to leave this board with you , so you can ride to see the tweaks we made to it. Just keep in mind you will probably have to pry it out of my hands.

Thanks again and God bless you and your family.

Accelerator
This board is specifically designed to make small wave performance surfing easy. You get fast-driving speed bursts off the front foot and hair-trigger, tail whipping warp-arcs off the back foot. A wider nose outline and low entry rocker get this board into waves quicker and blot it down the line faster. A bendy tail rocker sweeps off the back fin making it quick and responsive in tight rail-arcing hook-turns. An even single concave runs through the midsection of the board making for a “wide open sweet spot” i.e. the board wants to go even if you don’t have your feet right in the perfect spot every time.

Right at the fins the rocker ‘drops out’ and the single concave goes deep….this creates what feels like an engine under your back foot. The deep concave forms an air pocket as well as a straighter path to compress the water through the extreme rocker of the tail….this air pocket acts like a gas pedal or “accelerator”…push back on the tail and it rockets through turns like a piece of ice on wax paper.

Here’s the dimension I suggest based off your normal “good waves” shortboard: ride this board one inch shorter, 1/4″ wider in the middle, 1/2″ wider in the nose, and 1/8” wider in the tail. Go with the same thickness just with a fuller, boxy rail. This creates a flatter deck which gives the board a springier flex pattern….key for that extra little thwang in small waves.

Oh yea…as a bonus, it also goes looneybinsmental in everything up to slightly overhead.

Skill level: intermediate to advanced
Type of waves: primarily designed for knee high to shoulder and weak, but it goes great in everything up to slightly overhead.

Features single-to-double concave bottom for a drivey, predictable feel. Lower entry allows you to get into waves early and gain quick bursts of speed down the line. Good amount of tail rocker bending through the second half of the board makes for a tight turning, top-to-bottom board. Drives of the bottom like a dream and carries it’s speed through turns. An all around performance design that pushes back in waves large and small! My personal favorite.

Hey Todd and Charissa,

I got the Accelerator on Saturday and had a chance to ride it over the weekend.

The surf on Sunday was waist to chest high and a little slow, but it didn’t matter.

What a dream combination

Oh, and I love the color, too!

The board just kind of lifts up underneath your feet giving you a gliding/ skimming feeling

•November 11, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Todd and Charissa,

Well this email is horribly late but I blame that solely on the board you made me.  The lime green 5’9″ x 19″ 7/8 x 2″ 3/4 Rascal II you built for me is in a word…. “insane”.  I have literally ridden it for 4 weeks straight every single day of the week and am continually impressed with how it performs.

It has turned around what would normally be a

boring surf sessions in gutless surf

into killer sessions.

The board just kind of lifts up underneath your

feet giving you a gliding/ skimming feeling that I

have not experienced before.

My surfing has never looked or felt better and I can’t thank you enough for that!

I know that this board is reported as a “small wave / gutless surf” board, but I have to say

it is one of the most versatile boards

I have ever ridden.

With the 5 fin setup, I can make adjustments for when faces start jacking up to give the board more bite into the wave (It ripped right through pumping head high to HH+ waves).  The waves have gotten quite a bit bigger the last two days and I moved back to my standard shortboard……

I lasted for all of 4 rides before I

pulled the Rascal II out again.

That would be my only complaint about this board,

I want to ride it in everything!!

I will definitely be calling upon you in the future for another board.

Thanks again to both of you!  Todd for making the board I always wanted and Charissa for being hands down the coolest person to do business with.

Hi Todd/Charissa,

The board was delivered on my doorstep on Wednesday. Amazingly there was also a clean chest high swell running at one of my favorite breaks!

I’m very lucky to get a new board and use it the same day in inconsistent Bermuda.

The board paddles amazingly well and gets into the waves nice and early and charges fast with the nose eagerly passing through the sections.

It rides exceedingly well on the faces

and is very loose rail to rail.

It has done everything Todd said it would do for me and I’m really looking forward to getting it out in the looming hurricane swells!

Honestly, this “talk to the shaper” thing is no baloney…

•July 3, 2008 • 1 Comment

Hey Todd and Charissa,

I got the board yesterday and was psyched to see the sickest looking board ever on my couch. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to use it until today and even though it missed the best part of this fun little jersey swell we had, I did get to ride it all morning on the tail end of the swell, in waist high and glassy surf. I was very happy to find that the board backed up it’s sick looks in the water.

After only my first ride I realized that

you’re on to something special

over there in Ventura.

Everything seems effortless and flowing on my new board, from the takeoff all the way to the kickout. It robert crane, custom surfboarddefinitely helps me throughout every single one of my turns, I can kind of feel it finishing off my roundhouse for me, which is pretty sick seeing as I’ve been working on it for months on my old board and now I can finally get it all the way around in one smooth motion.

On some of the bigger

sets, I could actually

feel this flex thing you

were talking about, almost as if the board was

slinging me through the turns,

especially when I really put some power into it (powerful for the 125 pound ME that is). It’s fast but not too fast where I’m out in the flats, and it paddles and rides like a dream. Plus its really light, which is awesome because I’m too light to be handling a PU the way I can handle this one. I couldn’t have asked for more.
This was my first experience ordering a custom board, and I was very very surprised. I went in expecting to ask for a board model and dimensions and any other specifications and that’s it. As evidenced by over 20 emails between myself and you, this was a very interpersonal project, with input and suggestions from both sides.

Honestly, this “talk to the shaper” thing

is no baloney.

The board is a nice balance for taking my surfing a level up yet keeping in mind my level of experience and size

•May 13, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Todd / Charissa,

Sorry it took so long for me to write but it was awhile before we received some good swell for me to give the board a going over and since then

I have been having the most fun in my life surfing with it.

But before I get to the board I wanted to thank you for the most impressive service I’ve seen in awhile. You both were easily accessible, I never had to wait long for any sort of response to
questions and I felt the service was done with a smile. From Todd calling me in Spain and taking his time to discuss the board with me to Charissa keeping me updated on its progress, the service was high class all the way.

Now about the board….

First off it looks totally sick.potsep1.jpg

The kevlar looks awesome as does the greyish color from the glassing. Combined with the digital camo that you put on the bottom of the board it looks totally insane. I received tons of looks and comments about how incredible it looks and needless to say I love it.

As for the performance,

I don’t know what you do Todd but you must

cast a spell or sprinkle magic dust over it or something because this

hands down performs better then any other board I have tried.

Since I have had the board I feel like I have taken my

surfing to a new level and I’m having way more fun in the water.

Mis mejores deseos.

the Lil Rascal has had an incredible affect on my surfing ability and stoke

•April 30, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Duuuuude!
I can’t believe how great this board (Lil Rascal 6’1″x20″) works!

I surfed 2 foot Oceanside yesterday and I felt almost like Jay Phillips: catching waves outside with the longboaders, passing them, doing floaters and cutbacks on tiny waves.

Normally I would have gone home because it was so gutless and small, but I decided to put your “project” to the test. You passed!
A week ago I surfed Lowers and found, to my surprise, that the board worked equally as well backside. In some ways I even like it better because of the way it accelerates and snaps off the top.
The next day I was at walled, shoulder high Churches making sections no one else could.

And my three friends said I was surfing better than ever. The envy was thick. I

‘m still making adjustments for more in-the-pocket surfing but I have zero complaints. On several occasions, complete strangers have asked about the board. Though I’d love to take credit and chalk it up to my surfing ability, the Lil Rascal has had an incredible affect on my surfing ability and stoke. Don’t be surprised if you start getting calls from south Orange County.

Thanks for the insane board!

the board practically paddled itself into waves…

•April 14, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Todd and Charissa Proctor,

I got the board that was shaped for me last Wednesday. It looks great, and it arrived on time and unharmed. Of course I couldn’t wait for a 2 foot mushy summer day to take it out, so the following Saturday when a shoulder high swell rolled in I gave it a first spin. To sum things up, the board rips.

It’s fast down the line, feels just right rail to rail, and catches everything!

I think anyone considering a fish for their quiver should seriously consider the lil’ rascal. The conditions were hollow early on and the

board practically paddled itself into waves.

Later in the day the winds turned onshore, and even when the waves got mushy the board performed at the same level. I was really impressed.

I also wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed working with both of you. The entire process was really smooth and easy and I would not hesitate to come to Proctor Surfboards again for another magical board. Shouldn’t be long until i’m looking for a new performance board!

Since picking it up last weekend, I have ridden it at head high Trestles, head high Swami’s and 10-12 foot closed out Mission Beach

•January 16, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Hey Todd,

I hope all is going well and you guys are getting tons of waves from this swell!!

I wanted to give you some feedback on the Blackbird, the best board I have EVER ridden.  This board is everything you said it would be and more.  Since picking it up last weekend, I have ridden it at head high Trestles, head high Swami’s and 10-12 foot closed out Mission Beach (for a contest – not by choice).  First off, this board is so fast right from the take off, I find myself confidently freefalling into waves five feet behind the peak and zipping right into position.  When coming off the top, it releases like no other, actually pushing your lips higher and projecting you through the turns down the line.  The tail will bust out insanely at times, especially on the backside, totally breaking free and reengaging for some pretty solid comments from people watching.  I found moving the back foot up off the fins helps it go through the high tide mushy spots with no loss of speed and keeps it really manueverable.  This may be the board of all boards, if you can think it, you can do it!  It truly goes where you want it to.  I would recommend it to anyone wanting to take their surfing to the next level!  I’ll give you some feedback on the Greased Pig soon, but fortunately the waves haven’t been small enough for it yet!  HA!

We had the fourth contest at solid 10 – 12′ Mission Beach yesterday and I had a near drowning incident involving EMT, lifeguards etc.  It wasn’t the board, but instead the little string on the leash broke leaving me in a rip tide with no board, a filled wetsuit and a 6 wave set on the head.  Despite my near tragedy, the Blackbird made it out of the carnage fine and I still made it to the finals even with the one wave I had in the semis.  I can’t believe the Blackbird sustained no damage – that foam must be kriptonite, because I took the one that broke my brand new leash right on the back.  The whole contest crew was on their feet watching and just in awe that the board didn’t break (not a scratch!).  It was one of those scenes where everyone went, ‘Ohhhhhhh!’.

I am thinking of backing it up with an SR71 and maybe an Ante Up / SR71.  Here are some thoughts / questions:

1)  Would you recommend making any adjustments from the Blackbird to SR71 (length, width, etc) based on the differences between the two boards?
2)  Would you recommend decreasing the widepoint of 18.5 if I went up by an inch to 6.1 for the SR71 or can I leave it alone?
3)  On the Ante Up, if I get into a Big Rock / Point Mugu situation w/ a lot of water moving and offshores, do I want a PU w/ heavier glass or a Proxy?

Thanks Todd and Charissa for all the support!  Check the shots of Braeden practicing his pig dog on the Greased Pig!

God Bless,

Paul

I’m glad to see that the hard work of many who have been looking at alternatives for years are finally getting recognition

•December 9, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Hi Todd,

To start with, I hope everything is going well for you up there in Ventura. With the sudden interest in epoxy technologies, I’m guessing you’re still really busy.

With all the surfboards you make, being that I have only ordered the one with you so far, you’re probably don’t remember me. I ordered my board at the beginning of the year, picked it up at the beginning of April, and am just now taking the time to write you an email. The board I ordered from you was a flexible-epoxy, 6’3” x 19” x 2.5” Groveler IV.P
I gave you a try because I had read and heard about your unique epoxy, and in light of the foam fiasco, decided to invest in someone trying to do something different. Because the board was made with something completely different from what I’ve ridden for the last 17 years, I was expecting it to take a while to get used to.

What I found is that right away I liked it.

It felt more lively and quick than my other boards, and not at all too stiff.

After a little while I was quickly able to utilize the unique rocker combination you have on this board. Because I’m a bigger guy, I have always ordered my boards wider and flatter for the average days to help with speed. However, now I realize that I was starting to go too flat, especially in the tail, because on your board I can step back and really pivot the board quickly, kinda like a skateboard. If I need speed, I just center my weight and take advantage of the flatter mid-section. The bump in the tail helps keep it loose, and by going less wide it feels quicker rail to rail.

So now I’ve had the board a few months and surfed it in all kinds of waves and conditions. What’s been great is that the board still feels very alive, and I feel like I’m surfing better. I have even had someone tell me (actually the shaper who I used to get boards from) “that board really works good for you.” On top of that, I still have not had to fix one single ding.

A lot of my friends have started riding the EPS/Epoxy combinations and generally like them. Although that structure seems to yield even lighter boards than your flexible epoxy, they seem to not hold up as well.

I’m glad to see that the hard work of many who have been looking at alternatives for years are finally getting recognition. I admire the people who have been trying something different (with the exception of a certiain “pop-out” company and its owner).

Again, thank you for taking the time to talk over the details of the board and then providing exactly what I was looking for. I hope your innovations and technologies allow you to keep making great boards while also allowing you to make a good living. Keep up the good work- Pr. 22:29

Merry Chrismas and Happy New Year to you and Todd.

My two 6 channels single fin are perfect.

I’ve surfed the 6’6. It’s a very fast board
going up and down very easily.
This is the perfect all around surfboard for me.
I will bring the 6’8 in march 07

Todd,

Hola, first of all let me thank you for the 6’8” rounded pin flexible epoxy, Though I have only got to use it a few times for it’s intended use, I must say I am sold on your epoxies. Without getting into all the specifics

your boards are unlike any other epoxy I have tried.

I am now inquiring about getting an everyday shortboard, SR 71 and also am interested in getting a small wave fish. I look forward to working with you again.

Todd, here is my feedback on the 6’4” LeVee Flexible Epoxy

•December 8, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Todd,

Here is a follow up to the 6’2″ x19 x2 7/16″.
This board is amazing.
It gets into waves very easily, and paddles well. It is fast on the take off, and with a small pump has great bursts of speed around sections and down the line. I find it quick turning and very responsive. . .

I have only surfed the board a few times in waist to shoulder high Staircase(mushy), but so far the board has exceeded expectations.

Thank you again for making magic boards and spending the time to be sure my needs are met.
I fell honored to have a dedicated master craftsman making boards for a 40 year old kook like me. My available time to surf is very limited and having the right board makes each session that much better.

fast and loose board under my feet

•December 5, 2007 • Leave a Comment

I look forward to many good sessions on my new Proctor surfboard.

your board (Ante up 6.6) was magic

•December 5, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Hi Todd,

I came back from Indo few weeks ago.

The waves were super nice and and your board (Ante up 6.6) was magic.

I really had a lot of fun with it. Thank you for this great board.
I will need a new board to replace my 6’2, it s the board I use everyday here when the surf is small(1-4ft).
Which board do you recommend for the small surf ? I was thinking about the pig or the module ?
Thanks.

It was so much fun on every type of wave I tried it on

•December 5, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Hej Todd!!

Thank you so much for my board.
I love it soooooo much!!!!!
It is fully the coolest board!!! I would have written earlier, but I just got back into Sweden.

I spent the month in Cali trying out my new board. It was so much fun on every type of wave I tried it on. On top of being a wicked shape, the detail on it is killer and looks really cool when you’re riding a wave. I can’t wait to try it out here on some proper Swedish waves. Please keep the design on file, if this one gets hurt I fully want one just like it. Take care and hope you’re having a great summer!!!!

finally we got some surf up here….:)
so I got the little board into some surf yesterday, probably the third time on the board and it works great. I am super comfortable on it, it catches waves easy, and is fun to ride. The little board pushes me to surf better, as it is exactly the step up in performance that I needed….

This is the only the 5th time I have custom ordered boards, mostly because it seems that shapers listen while you are in the shop, and then do their own thing in the shaping bay, and I haven’t generally gotten the board I asked for.

You made the right boards for me- I really appreciate it!

the verdict is a true spoiler, fast and loose and catches wave easily

•December 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Todd,
well we finally got waves here on Maui was a terrible summer and start of fall. when i first recieved the new board it was a step up from your other epoxies that you made for me in overall look..But i did not want to ride it until we got some quality waves.

the verdict is a true spoiler, fast and loose and catches wave easily and no learnig curve fits like a glove.

everyone that has seen it has been impressed showed it to Tom Parrish [legendary perfectionist]and he had that look that said plenty without comment.the proboxes are kind of interesting what would have been your set for fins in degrees? tried the 0,4 and 6 degree inserts so far and the board did not work magically till i put in the 6 degree inserts , maybe too many possibilties as we talked about..my magic to complement your board design are 6 degree black inserts with fsc fiberglass slater 8 time world champ fins fast and loose.is this board the constuction in your video where i see a board being banged against a pole?or was that something newer.took out the 7’8 ante up on a bigger day and it also rode very well ,refoiled some futures to clone the slater fins and made the board work even better.anyway mahalo for the spoilers…

Hey Charissa,

I am writing this in regards to my 5′ 6″ Lil’ Rascal custom board.

The board is insane and is now my go to board for anything h/h and under (even though I will ride it in bigger clean surf).

Todd’s dimensions for me were right on and the epoxy is better than any of my XTR boards. Even the boards grey color is a nice change and I can NOT wait to get on a Blackbird or SR71. Thanks to Todd for answering every question I had and making sure this board was going to be magic. And to you Charissa for your superb customer service and making this process painless and getting my board to my doorstep just as promised. I am stoked.

I like it alot and love the final look, thanks for your help, I know I’ll be back soon either to try somthing else or bring a friend.

That board is a masterpiece

•December 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

The swell is backing down. It wasn’t all that it was cut out to be. I surfed Count Line point everyday. Monday was really fun because it was uncrowded. More importantly, like I said, the Circa is a Diamond in the rough! That board is a masterpiece. Anybody, excluding the top 10 percentile of surfers would be better served riding a Circa style board. It will revolutionize what they are doing. I am stoked! Keep shaping the magic. MSJ

Shaper’s Description:

“Circa ’86″ eighties model

Can you believe there is actually an 80’s model…I’m feeling old. Actually, I was a grom in the 80’s and what a great time it was; in part due to board design – less work for more speed; surfing didn’t have to be so technical back then and it seemed like there were less knee injuries… I don’t know? Features flat deck, angled down rails, flat-to-vee bottom, even a beautifully hideous beek nose. So here’s my quick, forgiving little gem that hearkens back to the days of Curren and Occy duals, “Kong”, “Rabbit”, “The Saint”, a young ”Butto”, “The Law”….yesterdays heroes that aren’t so different from today’s.

I got to ride my board Saturday at Saltcreek and I had a blast. The waves were small but the board was awesome! It turns so well off the bottom and carves very well.

Of all the custom boards I have had made for me, this one by far is the MAGIC :) one!

I tried it with the twin fins and it was crazy

•December 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Todd,
Just want to let you know the small wave board is working great. It was just what I was looking for! I tried it with the twin fins and it was crazy, it was all I could do to keep the board under me. I will try it again once I get my feet back. Only being able to surf 4 times for the past 3 years, it will take me a little to get everything back. I have not tried the other 2 but I know they will work, the last ones were perfect.

Northern Japan actually has some good waves. I have only been able to make it out a few times but it has been chest to head and glassy in the early morning. I have heard this pretty much what to look for all winter with some bigger ones every once in a while. Now I just have to get use to the cold.
The water is about 48 but the air is 30 and both are only getting colder.

I was looking at the site and the new “Ridiculous” board looks insane. I will have work on getting some funds up for that.

Thanks for everything!

First the board looks great, Paddles great, floats my big butt just fine

•December 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Todd and Charissa,

Well I took my new rocket 88 out Sunday, Strand was about chest high and very good shape. First the board looks great, Paddles great, floats my big butt just fine.

First wave came, about 5′ left. I paddled and was in the wave fast, the board dropped it, I stood, dropped to the bottom and made a big sweeping bottom turn. The board reacted just the way I wanted it to. There was about a 10′ long section just ahead of me,

I put just a little pressure on the inside rail and the board climbed to the top of the face and screamed passed the section onto the shoulder,I stepped back (I’m goofy foot) and the board responded with a very smooth and controlled cut back. The rest of the day was just as fun (until it blew out) this board did what I wanted it to. I’m stoked.

In the past 4 years I’ve owned 4 epoxies. This is by far the best epoxy I’ve ever been on.

The response of this board is like a very light weight 9’6″ glass board. While riding it I had to remained myself that it was an 10′ epoxy. it did not act like any epoxy I’ve every ridden. I love it. Todd did a fantastic job on this board and I could not be happier. Thanks for everything and the best board I’ve owned in many many years.

I don’t think I’ll ride anything but a flexible epoxy for a long time

•December 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Following up on the other email… I don’t think I’ll ride anything but a flexible epoxy for a long time. I had ridden an epoxy board before, a “ST”, made with the usual PVC sandwich. I actually liked the board, being lighter and stronger, but it was nothing like your board. I think that you have really perfected it, having the durability and the light weight, but with a board that has some real spring. I rode it every day in Cabo and within the first few rides I was just sitting there, thinking that this was the best board I’d ever ridden. I really noticed it through my turns. The board would curve with the wave and then spring me through my turns as I came around. The flexible epoxy has made me a better surfer and much more fluid. Out of the two models, I got the lighter board with more flex and it’s a lot like your standard high performance shortboard with 4 oz. glassing, but better. It flexes, making turns harder and faster… just think about a snap, the tail of the flexible epoxy tweaks back and then snaps forward. I felt so much better and smoother. It was just sick, the way it climbs foam and the way it works with you, flexing and snapping.

Thanks a lot Todd, for getting me the board before my trip and that nasty spray job

Hey Todd, i hope all is well in Ventura and with the board operations. I’ve had my hands full over the past few days with TS Ernesto- we scored big and the flexible epoxy was there to get me through it. I can’t believe the life this board has, it’s incredible. …. I have put that board through hell over the past two summers, just throwing it into the biggest and heaviest surf i could find, and it didnt disappoint. I will be talking with you in the near future about a new twig.

AFTER BEING OUT OF THE WATER FOR 2 AND A HALF YEARS THAT BOARD MADE ME CATCH UP WITH MY SURFING

•December 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

HEY,

HOPE YOU GUYS ARE DOING GREAT. JUST WANT TO LET YOU KNOW HOW GOOD YOUR BOARDS WORKED FOR ME .

GOT BACK FROM COSTA RICA TWO WEEKS AGO, TOOK THE 6’4″ AND THE 7’0″ WITH ME. RODE THE 6’4″ ALL OVER THE PLACE FROM WAIST TO HEAD HIGH AND I WAS SO CONFIDENT ON IT. AFTER BEING OUT OF THE WATER FOR 2 AND A HALF YEARS THAT BOARD MADE ME CATCH UP WITH MY SURFING. BEST BOARD I EVER OWNED. RODE THE 7’0″ IN HEAD HIGH WAVES IN PLAYA HERMOSA. IT WAS SO EASY TO PADDLE ON BIGGER WAVES AND AFTER DROPING IN IT’S JUST SO FAST.

WHEN I GOT BACK TO FLORIDA I HEARD WE HAD A STORM BRINGING SOME SWELL . BEING MY FIRST SWELL IN FLORIDA I STARTED ASKING ALL THE LOCAL KIDS HOW BIG IT WAS GOING TO GET AND THEY WERE ALL SAYING DOUBLE OVER HEAD WHICH WAS !@#$%^&*. SO I DECIDED TO BUY A BOARD ON ONE OF THE LOCAL SHOPS. BOUGHT A 6’6″ SHARP EYE BIG GUY BOARD, WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING? I DON’T KNOW IF IT WAS THE BOARD OR ME( HOPEFULLY IS WAS THE BOARD, HAHAHA) BUT DEFINITELY I DID NOT HAVE FUN IN THE WATER. THE BOARD HAD NO STABILITY AT ALL WHEN I WAS BEGINING TO STAND UP.DEFINITELY GETTING RID OF IT.

DECIDED TO GO BACK WITH MY 6’4″ PROCTOR AND I SURFED SO GOOD I EVEN GOT BARRELED IN MAYPORT POLES, WHICH I THINK IS THE BEST WAVE I RIDDEN IN FLORIDA.

WELL, I’M GOING OUT TO SEA FOR SEVEN MONTHS IN TWO WEEKS SO I’M PLANNING ON LOOSING A LOT OF WEIGHT SO I CAN ORDER A BRAND NEW THREE BOARD QUIVER FROM YOU GUYS AND TAKE THEM BACK HOME TO PUERTO RICO WHEN I’M DONE IN THE NAVY. THANKS FOR SHAPING ME THESE TWO AWESOME BOARDS. I’LL BE CALLING YOU GUYS FROM SOMEWHERE OVERSEAS TO PLACE MY ORDER AND HAVE MY NEW BOARDS BY THE TIME I GET BACK TO THE STATES.

The board paddles like a dream. The extra thickness works perfectly

•December 4, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Dear Mom and Pop surf shop proprietors –

Just got out of the water – first session on my new board. I always try to pay extra attention the first time on a new board to retain a sense of how the board ‘feels’ in some standard maneuvers as compared to the ‘muscle’ memory from a previous board.

So, here are the results:

The board paddles like a dream. The extra thickness works perfectly. Knee paddling is a snap. Prone, I can get going really fast and maintain trim across the water. It gets “up on step”, to use a seaplane term for takeing off on water, and from there I can maintain speed with just minimum effort combined with quick strokes.

I put the fins in, two on the outside, the big one in the center. So I’ll have to futz with that set up, including adding high density foam to the outside fins to give them foil. However, the lack of foam up in the nose area, due to the pulled in template and step deck, results in the board coming around on a dime under complete control. No sense of steering a big block of foam around, no pendulum effect from a big blobby nose.

Speed and trim are simply remarkable – the pulled in nose gives the outline the perfect curve vs. the wall of the wave, so I can do a quick cross-over step and the board just fits the wave and goes!

Got two good lefts, and a friend on the beach said it looked like I was riding a shortboard!

So, all in all, the first impressions couldn’t be better. Everything I wanted to achieve with the modifications over last year’s board seem to have been accomplished!

And the colors! So cheery and friendly! Maybe I need a death’s head skater logo or something, cause just sitting on the board makes me smile.

Ok, that’s about it for now. Thanks for all the effort – we set out to do something different based on sound reasoning about what makes a good longboard, and the results couldn’t be more encouraging.

The board made me feel like a much better surfer than I am

Hey Guys,

I got home late last nite tired out after the last days of “test riding my new board”.

WOW!!!!!!! I could not believe my first ride. I felt like the board was connected to my brain.

It was awesome. The transitions from rail to rail were so smooth and quick. Turning from the tail was great.
It really was an effortless ride.
That was my first ride. I was, of course, quick to attribute it all to my superior skill level. However, as the days went on, I really came to appreciate how well the board rode.
Some of the qualities I really appreciated and what I had asked for were,
1. The board was very stable under foot.
2. Turns were quick and smooth
3. Speed was there and getting up the face and sticking that high line was cake.
4. I had a couple of late take-offs but no problem. A liitle weight shift and I rode the tail through the drop into a nice bottom turn. It never felt out of control.
5. The board just did not want to pearl even when I got my fat ass up front it rode beautifully. In fact I kept looking down at the nose thinking, “it should dive about now and send me over the nose if I don’t move”.
6. The board is really light but it has plenty of float and really easy to handle through the paddle out.
7. The board made me feel like a much better surfer than I am. I never had to fight it, it just did whatever I wanted.

I used an 8″ center fin (instead of 9″) centered in the box. Beautiful!
I still need to get used to a little harder, stronger paddle getting into the wave after my 10″ but that will come.

Needless to say, I really love this board and can’t wait to take it back to Costa Rica in June. Thanks so much for the great job!

I think I finally pushed it to its limits today with a typhoon swell and solid 8 foot faces.

•December 3, 2007 • 2 Comments

Todd & Charissa,

Hey just wanted to let you know how stoked I am on the boards or should I say board. I have not gotten a good chance to ride the quad but the twinny is insane. I take both boards but always seem to find a reason to pull the fish out instead of the quad. It is everything that I wanted.

My breach break has transformed into a mush point break this summer and the fish just excels in it.

I think I finally pushed it to its limits today with a typhoon swell and solid 8 foot faces. Felt like I was on a skateboard going up and down the faces. I will let you know how the quad is working if I can ever get off the fish.

Thanks again,

They’re back ’cause they’re fast. This is an updated version of the original “Fish” design. I just got my new custom board in the mail this morning and i couldn’t have asked for more.

Todd,

Buying a new board is a scary thing, because you never know what you are going to get.

Thanks for taking the time to make my board RIGHT.

I was so nervous shopping for a new board that i went around asking different surfers how they liked their board, and asking different shapers what they recommended to me but i was still unsure where to go. I was recommended to you by a friend and so here i am. I just got my new custom board in the mail this morning and i couldn’t have asked for more. I unpacked it and sped straight to the beach, and got some great rides. It was so different for me to have a board that responded to my moves instead of going through the motions yourself while your board is doing it’s own thing. (man… people look dumb when that happens). The bottom line is, I can tell that you put your heart into the board and made sure that it was best for me. and by the way it has some sick graphics on it! you’re right Todd that wave is SWEEET.
Thanks.

Aloha Charissa and Todd.

Today I recieved my first Proctor Surfboard:

the Groveler IV.sw four fin diamond tail.

The board looks absolutley awesome!

Todd, you did an outstanding job in creating this board for me.
The airbrush looks great too.
I couldn’t be happier with it. I can’t wait to ride it.
I’m so stoked to have my first custom board.

You both were a pleasure to work with. I hope to get more boards from you in the future. I’ll be sure to send a pic and a review of how it rides,
as soon as a hurricane snaps this long awful flat spell were experiencing.

Thank you so much. I wish you both the best.

Sincerely,
